The Astrology of Scorpios in Black Liberation: Victor Hugo Green

The Astrology of Scorpios in Black Liberation: Victor Hugo Green

The themes of Scorpios in Black Liberation is one of survival and control over one's self and environment specifically. This is why I chose Victor Hugo Green.

Victor Hugo Green was a mail carrier for the US Postal Service. He was also the creator of The Negro Motorist Green Book later retitled The Negro's Travelers' Green Book but also called Green book for short. This was a travel guide for Blacks (Negroes) on how to navigate and travel cross America in the 1930s', 1940s', 1950s' and 1960s'. It wasn't just a travel guide but a survival guide for blacks during the 1950s'Jim Crow era.

Starting in the 1930s' using his over 23 years of experience, skills, and expertise as a US mail carrier; Green collected, reviewed, and provided information of which US towns, motels, hotels, gas stations, stores, restaurants, bars/taverns and resorts, blacks were safe to visit and travel to. This was during the time of Jim Crow, racial segregation and more extreme and overt forms of racism, racial profiling, violence, aggression, and LEGAL discrimination against black people. It's important to note that blacks especially after World War II were able to achieve more middle class lifestyles which included traveling and owning automobiles.

Despite their emerging wealth it was hard to navigate the tumultuous and often dangerous landscapes and environments when traveling. Blacks often had to deal with segregated restaurants, gas stations, and hotels. Not only that but also had to deal with whites only and/or sundown towns (blacks had to be gone by sundown) that often proudly attack and lynched blacks.

As a way to provide a solution to these experiences and challenges, from 1936-1966 Green later with the help of his wife (he died in 1960) he published the "Green book." This was a guide for black motorists

In 1947 he retired from the Postal Service and established a travel agency business to go along with his annual Green book. He would offer readers money to submit reviews about their experiences as black travelers and black motorists. He will also ask for information from his Post Office colleagues about their own experiences and expertise of the different cities, and businesses/services in their routes. He also created a partnership with Standard Oil later known as Esso gas stations that were more open to black travelers.

Other gas stations like Shell gas stations refused black customers. Esso endorsed and sponsored The Green Book while The Green Book provided business and customers to Esso gas stations.

The Green Book had sold about 15,000 every year via mail order and the success of it allowed Victor Hugo Green to retire, hire a small staff and start a black travel agency

Not only was it known as The Green Book it was known as the bible of black travel during Jim Crow. It not only covered the United States of America but also Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. After the 1964 Civil Rights Act that abolished and made racial discrimination illegal The Green Book's popularity fell.

He didn't try to change the laws or rules or policies specifically. I think he worked with the challenges for blacks at the time and tried to control the environment and make life easier for black people despite the abuse and violence against blacks. He did his own thing and catered to his people, allowing them to truly experience life not as second class citizens but as ones with dignity

Let's get into his astrology:

Ascendant in Capricorn
if born 12 am - 28 Degrees Leo
if born 12pm - 29 Degrees Capricorn
if born 9pm - 23 Degrees Cancer

Sun in 17 Degrees Scorpio

Moon in 26 Degrees Cancer
if born 9 pm Moon in Leo**

Mercury in 06 Degrees Sagittarius
Venus in 07 Degrees Libra

Mars in 00 Degrees Pisces
if born 9 pm Pisces <> 12am Aquarius

Jupiter in 16 Degrees Aries
Saturn in 08 Degrees Libra
Uranus in 07 Degrees Scorpio
Neptune in 10 Degrees Gemini
Pluto in 09 Degrees Gemini
North Node in 07 Degrees Taurus

There isn't a time of birth plus he was born in 1892 so I had to find an online astrology birth chart calculator that went that far back for birth years.

It's important to note that with an unknown birth time I don't have access to information on his houses. That aside it is fitting for him to be a Capricorn ascendant seeing how business minded and disciplined he was.

I can also see Libra, Virgo, Cancer, and other signs too but the personal information on him is a bit limited.

Sun in Scorpio bastard conjunction to Uranus in 17 degrees Scorpio

Victor Hugo Green has Sun and Uranus in a bastard conjunction aka wide conjunction in Scorpio. This shows that he knew his own power.

People love to talk shit about Scorpio and it's darker "less evolved" traits (eye rolls) but Scorpio has the amazing ability of using their darkness, their shadow to transform themselves, others, and their environments.

Victor Hugo Green was resourceful, intuitive, emotionally intelligent, and resilient. He not only transform himself but also transformed the lives of other.

He started out as a long term mail carrier and was able to use the skills and connections learned as a mail carrier to create a business that not only employed others but provided guidance and safety to skinfolk. This is big Scorpio energy especially with Uranus.

One thing to note with Scorpio is that they are just as independent as they are relationship minded. Ruling the 8th House, Scorpio is not just about death, taxes, "secrets", and the shadow self. It's also about relationships, shared resources and about navigating between the personal, impersonal, the spiritual, and the worldly.

Scorpio has lone wolf energy that needs introspection and time to reflect in order to realize it's own power and ascend itself. Victor with Uranus in Scorpio rebels against his own nature by breaking out the mold and reaching out to world not solely focusing on its own survival but also others survival.

Victor wanted to live a worldly existence and wanted his skinfolk to live the same way. Instead of just using his skills and connections just for himself he shared it with others. It wasn't just information he shared but also a means of survival and social/spiritual survival currency.

This is one of the main reasons I chose Victor Hugo Green as Scorpio archetype for Scorpio energy in Black Liberation. Black Liberation is about survival amongst many other things. It was hard to find an appropriate Scorpio for this archetype though I am sure they are plenty to choose from.

Scorpio is a very low key sign and are not traditionally known as being about liberation in the traditional sense. That's more of an Aquarius, Libra, Capricorn thing because they are willing to work both within the system and without the system and often strive to galvanize via politics, political power, and associations.

All signs have Liberation energy but some are more overt, strategic about it than other signs.

Victor didn't use the power of politics and working within a system. He didn't set out to change laws, or work the system. No he transformed himself and use his own skills, power and associations to bring Liberation energy his own way. His Scorpio form of liberation was using his intuition and natural survivalist skills to allow himself and others to live fully and survive in dangerous, hostile environments.

Moon in Cancer (maybe Leo)

If he was born in the evening especially around 9pm he would be a Leo Moon. I can see that too.

If he's a Leo moon, it's because:
- He named his guidebook after himself.
- His guidebook catered to more affluent black people that could afford to own an automobile and to travel.

This signifies that he felt that blacks can aspire, be, and live greater than what society brainwashed and conditioned them to be. This takes natural confidence/assurance which Leo moons have.

However I can also see his Moon as Cancer too. He seems to want to look out and be protective for others which is protective compassionate energy of a Cancer moon.

The motto for the Green Book is “Carry your Green Book with you—You may need it.”

This is fatherly, protective energy, it's like a parent reminding you to eat or to keep a water, a knife, and a blanket in your car.

Also Moon in Cancer is business minded and intuitively knows how the minds and emotions of others work. Being business minded is about intuition, to deliver a service that you think others are willing to pay for. Moon in Cancer has this ability.

To keep it simple I will choose Moon in Cancer.

Mars in Pisces or Aquarius.
Mars square Mercury and Pluto/Neptune in Gemini

If he was born in the early morning hours he would have a Mars in Aquarius. It's still up in the air for me on which Mars sign he has since his 12pm/unknown birthtime Pisces mars is at 0 Degrees.

If he has Mars in Aquarius, it will make sense, that's a big part of his Liberation for the people energy. Mars in Aquarius is the humanitarian and individualist doing the work for both themselves and for other people. It's for the greater good, doing something for yourself that also helps others. He ran The Green Book

He also acknowledged that The Green Book would not be here forever and he hoped that the conditions of blacks in this country will eventually improved. This is quote from Victor Hugo Green:

“There will be a day sometime in the near future when this guide will not have to be published. That is when we as a race will have equal opportunities and privileges in the United States. It will be a great day for us to suspend this publication for then we can go wherever we please, and without embarrassment.”

He acknowledges the social climate in which the Green Book was created in spite of/to push back against. Mars in Aquarius is independent and social minded, the individual in the community. The Green Book was progressive, socially minded, and focused on giving black travelers a sense of independence and autonomy. The fact that he paid for readers to submit reviews shows that he valued the voices of others not just himself and was very community minded.

Not only that it's pretty rebellious in the sense that traveling and owning automobiles isn't as typical for blacks during this time. So many obstacles were put to discourage blacks from travel and living a good life so the Green Book was also like a soft subtle fuck you to the system and a way to rebel (tell me I can't do something, I am going to do it with a smile on my face).

If he has Mars in Pisces he would have a grand trine in Water. This means heighten intuitive abilities, a vast supply of emotional intelligence and very passive/receptive to the emotions of others. Mars in Pisces can put themselves in others people's shoes and give them what they want. Mars in Pisces is very adaptive and also progressive.

Victor Hugo Green knew the Green book wouldn't last long. Not only that but he changed it's name to accommodate international readers and readers who use planes and trains and not just automobiles. It wasn't just for Americans, not just for motorists, but people with the desire to travel, to fulfill their wanderlust. It's important to note that Pisces traditional ruler (before Neptune was discovered) was Jupiter. Victor understood that blacks needed a space to wander, to experience life, to see new things, and to learn about themselves through travel.

You have to be able to slip into someone's shoes and also be willing to get rid of your ego to cater to others' needs and sensibilities. Mars in Pisces can do this.

To keep it simple I will choose Mars in Pisces.

Venus conjunct Saturn in Libra

Victor with Venus conjunct Saturn in Libra he was socially charming and able to use his charm and social graces to form partnerships. Libra is ruled by Venus and represents the more intellectual, social, equality/social justice and side of Venus. Opposing Jupiter in Aries seesawed between wanting fairness, civility, and collaboration and also wanting to buck (and say fuck) the system and do his own thing.

I think The Green Book was also a silent but potent fuck you to society and the limitations set for blacks. Perhaps he was too polite to organize himself politically so he used his guidebook as a mute non political way to get his opinions across and show his support and confidence in his people.

Mercury in Sagittarius bastard trine Jupiter in Aries

If Victor's moon isn't in Leo and my points aren't valid you can look towards his Mercury in Sagittarius bastard trine Jupiter in Aries as a show of a larger than life confidence and belief in self.

His Mercury is in Sagittarius which shows he's quite confident and thinks of himself as greater than society thinks of him. What gives him the nerve after over 20 years working as a mail carrier to start his own business on travel? Yes his Scorpio energy plays a major role but it's not just this.

Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter and rules over traditionally the 9th House. Jupiter and the 9th House is about expansion, exploration, travel, higher education and crossing boundaries. The symbol for Sagittarius is the Archer, a person with a bow and arrow. The phrase is I Aim.

It takes a lot of self belief and confidence to switch up and do something different. Sagittarius mercury is a mutable sign so it's comfortable with change. Plus mercury is not just about writing and communication. It's about thinking processes, how one thinks. Confidence and belief starts in your mind, and Sagittarius like the other fire signs are naturally confident independent risk takers.

Not only this but his mercury in Sagittarius is supported by Jupiter in Aries. Jupiter in Aries is also confident and has a warrior mentality when it comes to their beliefs, ideals and values. Jupiter trining Mercury is like a overconfident, optimistic and expansive mind and mindset.

North node in Taurus opposite Sun/Uranus in Scorpio

Victor has North Node in Taurus opposite Sun/Uranus in Scorpio. I think this was the egg in the cake. The binding ingredient of his greater life purpose. His north node in Taurus is seeking worldly abundance and to live good. In his time and even now this meant travel and owning a car. His Scorpio energy would naturally be more focused on introspection and being abundant emotionally and spiritually. However Victor leaned into his North Node in Taurus and wanted to experience the Venusian pleasure of travel.

Travel for blacks during this time meant packing lunches in case they couldn't find an establishment that would allow them to eat inside.

Travel for blacks during this time meant carrying extra gasoline in case they were refused at gas stations.

Travel for blacks during this time meant bringing an empty bucket and leaving it in the backseat in case they couldn't find a colored bathroom in time for their next bowel movement.

Being black in America is not truly safe anytime but especially between 1930s-1960s. Victor wanted his skin folk to travel with both comfort and dignity to know that they didn't have to pack their own food, carry around and shit in buckets or lug around flammable material in order to fulfill their wanderlust desires. He provided the resourceful insight and survivalist skills of his Scorpio energy but also the pleasure and abundance seeking and business savvy of his North Node in Taurus.

Pluto and Neptune conjunct in Gemini opposite Mercury

This is like the icing on the cake or more like cupcakes. Pluto and Neptune are intergenerational outer planets so they effect a generation. This generation from roughly 1884-1914 is known for making strides in terms of communication and travel. This is the generation that lived to see the invention of telephones (1876 patented) airplanes (1803), cars (1885) and the popularity of mail in publications. This mercurial generation communication and travel were information. Victor was no different, indulging in travel via automobile and using his voice and others voices to show the possibilities for blacks.

His voice via The Green Book, was the voices for others too, others that wanted to learn, grow, experience life through travel and leisure. I think he used his Mercury opposite Pluto and Neptune well in the fact that he seesawed successfully between using the power (Pluto) and imagination/boundaries breaking (Neptune) of publishing/writing (Gemini) with the travel/expansive mindset of his mercury in Sagittarius.

Overall with Victor Hugo Green/the Green Book, is one example, one archetype of Scorpio in the Astrology of Black Liberation. Scorpio in the Astrology of Black Liberation is a worldly, experienced, intuitive powerful survivalist who despite difficult, dangerous circumstances and environments had found a way to thrive and transform itself and others. Not needing to galvanize via a social movement or to get into politics to achieve it's desires.

The Astrology of Libras in Black Liberation: Fannie Lou Hamer Voting Rights Icon

The Astrology of Libras in Black Liberation: Fannie Lou Hamer

For this edition to my Astrology of Black Liberation Series I will writing about the astrology of Fannie Lou Hamer. Fannie Lou Hamer was a voting rights, desegregation, and civil rights activist who fought for and register black people in Mississippi to vote. She was also integral in organizing Mississippi Freedom Summer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in 1964.

Fannie Lou Hamer Astrology Chart

October 6th 1917 in Winona, MS Note I chose the major city Winona instead of vague Montgomery County, Mississippi  where she was born in. She spent some time in Ruleville, MS in Sunflower County, MS which is an hour away from Winona.

Sun in 12 Degrees Libra

Moon in 29 Degrees Gemini

Mercury in 25 Degrees Virgo

Venus in 23 Degrees Scorpio

Mars in 14 Degrees Leo conjunct

Jupiter in 11 Degrees Gemini Retrograde

Saturn in 12 Degrees Leo

Uranus in 20 Degrees Aquarius Retrograde

Neptune in 6 Degrees Leo

Pluto in 5 Degrees Cancer

Lilith in 7 Degrees Virgo

N Node in 5 Degrees Capricorn

NOTE:

I consider a planet conjunct (or square, when they are in the same sign regardless of degrees. I consider this because even if they are out of orb or wide of a degree different they are working towards the same goals, struggles with similar things, and behaves in even if their relationship isn''t that close or tight or as strong. For me out of orb planetary relationships in planets of the same sign are familial but instead of twin or sibling relationships it's more like a cousin or half sibling relationship.  I think it's silly and arbitrary that because there is an orb of 11 degrees or a 15 degree difference between 2 planets that are the same planets that is NO relationship between them. There is a relationship, it's just not as strong as it is if is within 8 degrees, 4 degrees or whatever.

This is my own preference if you don't agree it's fine and I am not putting it on anyone. This is how I interpret it when I am working with charts in this personal astrology blog. I call them Bastard Aspects. Example Bastard Conjunction. Bastard Square, Bastard Trine, Bastard (insert aspect here) etc. Bastard (like a bastard child).

Bastard Grand Trine in Air Signs

Sun in 12 Degrees Libra

Moon in 29 Degrees Gemini

Jupiter in 11 Degrees Gemini Retrograde

Uranus in 20 Degrees Aquarius Retrograde

Fannie Lou Hamer has a Bastard Grand Trine in Air Signs with Sun in 12 Degrees Libra,  Moon in 29 Degrees Gemini and Uranus in 20 Degrees Aquarius Retrograde widely Bastard trining together. This means her communication and social abilities were superior and easy for her to tap into. Her intellect and ability to provide justice and balance via communicative relationships and leadership abilities was her ego (Sun in Libra). She used her ego (Sun) to promote her emotions/habits (moon) in super mercurial Gemini. Gemini moon is a VERY communicative sign so I suspect she couldn't keep her emotions to herself and had to express them. Grand trines is like best friend soul mate energy so using her ego (Sun) to express her emotions (Moon) to rebel/ find and be independent (Uranus) not just for herself but others to.

It's important that Libra and Aquarius has super social justice Big liberation energy because there is a focus on intrapersonal, of tapping into the collective, and making sure not only your needs are met but also the group.

Mercury in 25 Degrees Virgo in a Bastard conjunction Lilith in 7 Degrees Virgo

Fannie Lou wasn't a dummy and was very sharp, articulate and logical. She thought with logical and practicality. Her intelligence was able to promote herself to different spaces. Such example was she was promoted to timekeeper in the sharecropping business because she was the only one able to read and write. This was seen as a prestigious position. She used her mercury in Virgo to focus on the laborious duty of registering people to vote. It takes skill to convince and galvanize marginalized, disenfranchised, powerless, and oftentimes poor blacks in 1960s Jim Crow era Mississippi to vote. Part of that skill is her style of communication which in Virgo

Venus in 23 Degrees Scorpio

Fannie Lou had Venus in Scorpio. Passionate, willful, stubborn, with an emotionally intelligent nature. She spent most of her life in poverty due to her political activism. So she relied on donations and the kindness of others. She rubbed shoulders with other powerful activists like Angela Davis, and Kwame Ture (Stokely Carmichael). Venus in Scorpio is an extreme placement of many highs and lows in relations with others. Venus in Scorpio has the potential to attract powerful loyal allies (and enemies) and can often leverage their relationships to get what they want and need.

Voting now is not how it was in past. Well actually it's not all that different with now being that in 2020 there is a practice called political redlining which is one of many systematic racist methods of creatively and technically "legal" ways of discouraging and making it HARD for black people to via voter suppression. That run on aside, voting in 1960s' meant violence, potential death, and was STRONGLY opposed and denied for blacks.

Fannie Lou Hamer risked her life (she was thrown in jail and seriously beaten by the police for her activities). I suspect Fannie Lou Hamer was afraid but with Venus in Scorpio energy are drawn to "darker" (not always bad or evil btw) activities because they want to live life to fullest. Fannie's fear didn't stop her desire (Scorpio) and her sense of love for herself and her people.

Stellium in Leo

Fannie Lou Hamer is confident, proud, and bold in herself and her beliefs and is willing to fight for it. She has a Leo stellium with Mars in 14 Degrees Leo conjunct Saturn in 12 Degrees Leo and wide conjunction with Neptune in 6 Degrees Leo. This shows she has the drive and energy (Mars) and self discipline (Saturn) to fight for her beliefs. She also not only has ability to fight (Mars) but also break boundaries and transcend her physical boundaries and thresholds using idealism and strength of belief (Neptune) to get to her goals.

Using the same example of when she was thrown in jail, beaten up by cops, and threaten for encouraging blacks to exercise their voting rights and her campaigning for blacks to be register to vote. Her passion (Mars), focus/determined nature (Saturn) and ability to relate encourage others via her own idealism and purpose (Neptune) allowed her to withstand and transcend the physical bar. when you are pissed off enough violence or consequences are not as scary. Note her Venus in Scorpio squared her Saturn in Leo so she was very disciplined, passionate, and fearless.

Pluto in 5 Degrees Cancer exactly opposite her North Node in 5 Degrees Capricorn

Fannie had a forced sterilization via getting her tubes tied performed on her without her permission. This was known as a Mississippi appendectomy in which was a common injustice practice by the local Mississippi government . Pluto in cancer greatest generation. It was this injustice that prompted her to participate in the Mississippi Civil Rights movement . She couldn't birthe children (she did adopt), but so she transformed (Pluto) her nurturing familial oriented energy to birth a generation of new voters in her native state of Mississippi.

She has Pluto in Cancer so she's part of the Greatest Generation (the generation before the Baby Boomers loosely born between 1901- 1927). The Greatest Generation seemed to take on greater social, global, political, and moral responsibility for the world and more importantly humanity.

This is opposite her North Node in Capricorn. Her North Node in Capricorn points towards her building a career, becoming independent and establishing a legacy. I think she leaned more in her Pluto in Cancer/South Node in Cancer energy more than her North Node energy but she used Capricorn methods to achieve her aims. Her soul benefited more of the fruits of her labor than her North Node did in the sense that she didn't achieved worldly riches and status. She was in poverty the majority of her life and wasn't financially stable/independent. She didn't monetarily benefit from her activism. She isn't like these modern new aged weirdo social justice pandering capitalist public figures.

Random it's important to note that the soul in Vedic/Sidereal astrology is called Rahu (which is the North Node of the Moon). In Tropical astrology North Node is known as your life's purpose/destiny The Tropical Astrology equivalent to Rahu is the North Node in tropical astrology. FYI I am not that well versed in Vedic / Astrology.

My point is Fannie used her North Node via the Rahu soul Vedic/Sidereal definition as opposed to her Tropical North Node definition to fulfill her destiny by leaning into her south node Cancer tendencies and not actively working towards her North Node. She did all this using her North Node energy. Pretty much what I am saying she used her North Node energy to fulfill her South Node desires. I hoped this is not confusing.

FYI this is not to say that her North Node in Capricorn was ignored, forgotten but Fannie Lou's value system wasn't attached to the typical North Node in Capricorn goals (career and financial success).

Overall Fannie Lou Hamer's used her Libra Cardinal enterprising energy to create a sense of community via equality, fairness, justice, and allowing others to exercise their voice in an unfair racist political system. Her Libra energy is the glue for the rest of her chart because her ego was attached to leading, fighting, partnering and supporting others rights. As I said before Libra is that bridge that brings things to scale. FYI me using scale is not the actual scale (as in skin/fish skin). No I mean scale in a business sense (increase the size/growth of a business) but also is a double entendre because of Libra's scales. This is Libra's energy in Black Liberation, to make things up to scale.

All while the Scorpio knows Cancer has been stalking it because it has been stalking the Cancer FIRST. Y'all can cry, manipulate, abuse, file and break restraining orders together, while having break babies separately and constantly cheating on their current partners with each other

The Astrology of Black Liberation: Libra Season with 2016 Libra Nat Turner Blog in retrospect

The Astrology of Black Liberation: Libra Season with 2016 Libra Nat Turner Blog in retrospect

It’s Libra season and I am continuing my series, The Astrology of Black Liberation. This time it’s with Sun sign in Libra and the Libra/Venus/Cardinal Earth archetypes of Libra Season.

In this series I am writing about Black Liberation energy in regards to artists/activists/political figures, religion/spirituality/sexuality/creativity, music/art movements via all the sun signs/archetypes.

The Astrology of Black Liberation in Libra season is enterprising, one that on one hand focuses on beauty, fashion, culture, and using charm. The other side is the intellectual brainy communicative air energy that focuses on academia, work, socializing, and ideals of justice, equality (gender, class, race, etc.), and relationships/partnerships

Libra being a Cardinal sign, it's domain is Autumn/Fall season. No hot weather, no more rest or relaxation, it's time for work (and play). Working and socializing and balancing between the two.

Libra's task is bringing people together and creating relationships (partnership). Who wants to spend the colder weather being around someone you hate or don't even know well. Libra is that bridge that brings things to scale.

Libra's energy in the Astrology Black Liberation fits perfectly. It's one part charming, one part compromising, one part social justice warrior, and another cool intellect.

Black Liberation is a process as I keep saying. There isn't an end in sight, and every generation contributes to it

4 years ago in 2016 I wrote about Libra Nat Turner. To see my astrology blog post on Libra Sun Nat Turner in link here: https://theastrofiend.blogspot.com/2016/10/american-revolutionary-freedom-fighter.html

I didn't know it at the time but I think that was my intro to my 2020 Astrology of Black Liberation series.

Nat Turner was a preacher and devotedly religious and moral.

Nat Turner was educated by his master

Nat Turner led a rebellion that murdered his oppressors and slavers.

Libra Nat Turner is a contradiction. Devotedly religious, educated but also rebellious and "violent" (eye rolls). He worked and operated in the system (Christianity taught/brainwashed to oppress him) and did the socially acceptable thing. However he knew, his God knew that slavery is wrong. He fought against it violently.

When you think of Libra zodiac sign, you don't see violence or rebellion. To quote myself from 4 years ago

"Nat was a Triple Libra (Sun, Mercury and Venus all in Libra). This is the icing because a lot of people think Libra's are  just these charming, entertaining, spineless people pleasing bitch babies. But quite the contrary; remember that Libra is a MASCULINE CARDINAL  Air sign. Libra is all about fairness which means that sometimes they gotta step out a balance to take a stand. Aka morphing into a Dancing Prancing Social Justice Warrior Philanthropist (that will go THUG-LIFE on you). ALL in the name of justice and harmony of course."

Libra understands that sometimes you got to "play dirty" do bad wrong things for the right reasons/ideals, and step out of balance to get balance.

Libra in the Astrology of Black Liberation is the balancing, contradictory nature of black Liberation, the intellectualism, the building of social connections, inter/intra personal relationships, knowing when to compromise and work within the system, and the sometimes unavoidable violence (yes unfortunately Liberation can be VIOLENT) and rebellious spirit.

All this aside I hope y’all check out my upcoming blog posts for The Astrology of  Virgos in Black Liberation and the Spiritual Astrology of Black Liberation post. Happy birthday to all the Virgos. This is your season enjoy and bask in it's energy!

The Astrology of Virgos in Black Liberation: Trans & HIV Activist Marsha P Johnson: Liberation of Body/Mind

The Astrology of Virgos in Black Liberation: Trans & HIV Activist Marsha P Johnson: Liberation of Body/Mind

Marsha P. Johnson was a black “trans” activist who played a major role in LGBTQ+ liberation of the 1970s’. This was during a time where “trans” and “cross-dressers/drag queens” were arrested, institutionalized, and treated as mentally sick and depraved. Marsha P. Johnson was said to have "thrown the first brick" in the Stonewall riots. The riots were between cops & the LGBTQ+ Greenwich Village community at a LGBTQ+ friendly bar, the Stonewall Inn in NYC in 1969 that sparked the Gay Rights Movement. FYI no one is sure who threw the first "brick" "glass".

Marsha P Johnson was a drag queen and and local popular icon fixture in the NYC gay scene and art scene since 1966 having relocated to NYC in 1963 at the age of 18 from her native New Jersey. Marsha P. Johnson was part of the Hot Peaches comedy drag queen troupe. Marsha P. Johnson was very politically and socially active. A founding member of the Gay Liberation Front in 1969 after the riots. In 1970 Marsha P. Johnson co-founded the radical activist group Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (S.T.A.R.), alongside close friend Sylvia Rivera.

Sun widely conjunct Jupiter in Virgo

Marsha had Sun widely conjunct Jupiter in Virgo.

Growing up in the 1950s’ and 1960s’ Marsha existence was a threat, a source of pain and shame. Growing up in a religious household; Marsha was sexually abused at a young age and made to feel like a freak for being gay. She wanted to live in her true/authentic self for her well-being and mental health.

It’s important to note that Virgo energy has to do with health (physical and mental) being that it’s the traditional ruler of the 6th House. The mind body connection is real and things effecting you internally can manifest externally. Virgo energy knows this and constantly strives to better their mental/physical state.

Though Jupiter is in “detriment” (rolls eyes) in Virgo. It shows Marsha had a larger than life persona. She moved from her small New Jersey town with little money and big dreams to the even bigger Big Apple (NYC). She invested and believed in herself (Jupiter), taking a gamble and creating her own “luck” and fortune.

Marsha however being different and being the time period that she’s in (honestly not that much has changed); she had to struggle. This includes participating in survival sex aka bartering sex for shelter and constantly getting harassed/attacked by men/people/cops.

Mercury widely conjunct Pluto in Leo

Marsha had Mercury widely conjunct Pluto in Leo this meant that her thinking/learning/communicating processes (mercury) were intensified to an obsessive powerful level (Pluto). In Leo Marsha thought of herself as more than she could be and it’s clear she took pride in herself.

Marsha’s voice/persona was powerful, dramatic, and theatrical. Known was the Mayor of Christopher Street (a street in the gay friendly NYC neighborhood of Greenwich Village) It’s important to note that the “P” in her name meant pay it no mind (her trans-ness/different-ness/other-ness. She spoke herself into existence, and loved herself enough to allow herself proudly and shamelessly to exist.

Mercury is supposedly said to be in detriment in Leo because some people believe Mercury is exalted in Aquarius (detriment is the sign opposite the domicile sign). I don’t know but I do see problems with fixed nature of mercury in Leo. A sense of stubbornness (fixedness), arrogance (Leo) in her speech/communication. Especially with intense, shameless, blunt, say it like you mean it Pluto energy. I could definitely see her sense of self-expression being offensive or crass to others.

Sun widely opposite Moon

Marsha's ego was in a tug of war with her emotions. Larger than life, discerning but humble Virgo energy was in struggle with impressionable, emotional sponge Pisces. Pisces moons are often sensitive and empathetic with unpredictable emotions that soak in others’ energy and emotions. The way she reconciles the contradictions in her personality and emotions is to help others, to be a voice for others, and to be out in the front-lines.

Venus, Saturn and North Node in Cancer

Marsha also has a pseudo stellium in Cancer (Venus, Saturn, and North Node in Cancer). I say pseudo stellium because technically North Node is not a planet so its not an official stellium. Remember a stellium is 3 or more PLANETS in one sign or in one house.

Anyways Marsha has an abundance in uber sensitive Cardinal Water energy Cancer. Marsha was constantly searching for a home perhaps in themselves and in their physical bodies

Liberation of body – Marsha had Venus widely conjunct Saturn in Cancer which continues the themes of her finding black liberation through her body. However what she encountered was limitations to her sense of beauty (Venus conjunct Saturn). Marsha lived in a time (again not much has changed) where her being, her beauty and the way she presented herself was targeted violently and belittled.

This probably played with her sense of perception of her beauty and social/physical value. Marsha wanted to be loved and to be accepted for who she was (gender nonconforming) and was met with literal violence and abuse.

Her sense of liberation was finding a home for her being which is very Venus in Cancer.

Not that only but she was also poor which isn’t talked about with Venus. Beauty in the western requires effort and capital. Beauty in western society isn’t just being. It’s effort, hard work, expensive, time consuming, and a constant dance between trends and archetypes.

She had to wear cheap wigs, outfits, and makeup. As a woman nothing brings down and cheapens your beauty with cheap bad wigs and cheap makeup. FYI of course there is more to beauty than the physical and mass consumerism but also appearances are everything as woman. It’s often a performance and an act that we are forced to participate in. The politics of pretty, of beauty are real and there is a power/benefit to looking beautiful/pretty and at the very least “presentable”

Especially as a black women you must look “presentable” so you are not perceived and treated as “ghetto”, “low class aka poor, uneducated” which will give others the courage (more like audacity) to disrespect and discriminate against you.

Marsha as gender conforming/trans she also had to rely on the politics of pretty and not being able to properly fit into it. Regardless Marsha with resourceful Cancer energy made do with what she had.

Marsha with fellow trans activist and close friend Cancer sun Sylvia Rivera

Marsha also had north node in Cancer so her destiny was for her to search and find a family and a spiritual, physical, & emotional home. She was found a sense of family as best as she could with her drag/lesbian/gay/trans Stonewall Inn, comedy group, and Gay liberation Front friends. However the home part wasn’t there, being poor. It’s important to note that home and having roots is an important part of your psyche and growth. How can you feel safe and secure in this world if you don’t have 1 place (even just physical) to be safe in.

Marsha’s trans/dragness, homosexuality, her being poor, and the instability of mental illness kept this from her unfortunately.

Mars conjunct Uranus in Gemini

Marsha had Mars conjunct Uranus in Gemini which can show the unpredictable votive behavior, split and gender duality/fluidity in Marsha.

Note there is no particular placement in astrology that is coded to show gender duality or mental illness. It’s more of a mixture of life/free will/choice and how energy is directed in individual.

Like Uranus can show neutral, androgynous “gender neutral” energy but it more due to it the nature of Uranus being unpredictable, rebellious, and freedom loving.

That said in Marsha looking at her life story, free will and choice, in my interpretation I am choosing to look at her Mars conjunct Uranus energy.

Mars conjunct Uranus in Gemini can denote a chaotic sort of Prince and the prankster, Peter pan, split personality (in a non-vulgar astrology terminology) energy.

I have read that Marsha when she was in her masculine form was sad, violent, chaotic, and aggressive but Marsha in her feminine form was more at peace, loving, and generous. Marsha suffered from drastic mood swings described by friends as “schizophrenic.” These episodes landed her in psych wards, mental institutions, jail, and hospitals several times throughout her life.

Marsha's was Mars conjunct Uranus in Gemini squared both her Sun/Jupiter in Virgo & Moon in Pisces which can show her actions (Mars), her sense of personal freedom (Uranus), her sense of abundance/luck/expansion (Jupiter) emotions (Moon), and ego (Sun) were in constant conflict which can further shows her instability.

I also noticed an abundance of mutable energy in her natal placements with 3 out of 4 mutable signs (Virgo, Pisces, and Gemini). This is both good and bad. The good is highly adaptable, always moving/always a need to move, and the ability to bounce back/let go. The bad is mutable energy is very vulnerable sensitive energy and not a solid sense of self/core because of all the changing/adaptability.

Mutable energy dominates need to MOVE in all directions physically/emotionally/financially/spiritually otherwise they remain stuck which is un-natural. I said it before and I will say it again but “stopping in a mutable energy is akin to death like a fish out of water, a heart that stops beating, or the brain without oxygen.

Marsha not just being black and poor kept her stuck, but also being different/trans/gender non-conforming and mentally ill disabled her. If she was given a chance to be who she was, and wasn’t discriminated/targeted, for being black/poor/vulnerable/gender nonconforming and mentally ill she could’ve been more at peace.

Chiron in Libra

Marsha’s wounded healer is her struggle to fit in and to see one’s own beauty reflected in society. Marsha’s sense of liberation and why I chose her as one of the Virgo archetypes of Black Liberation Astrology is because she fought against this. She healed her world by fighting for others like her. Her healing was seeking justice and fighting for a place in this world.

Marsha partnered with other like-minded people and fought to change the perception and social/legal value of black, gay, trans-people. It’s important to note that even during this time (not much as change) Marsha wasn’t even allowed to participate in early gay pride celebrations. To put it bluntly she was seen as an embarrassing freak show and the gay/lesbian organizers want to distance themselves from her/trans/non-conforming people.

It’s important to note that Marsha P Johnson sadly died on mysterious and tragic circumstances in 1992. She was HIV+ positive at the time. Her body was found in the Hudson River. Her close friends believed she was tragically murdered and that the police didn’t investigate because she was seen was worthless. Supposedly witnesses heard her killer bragging in a bar about killing her. The police and some of her other friends at the time believed it was a suicide. Now her death is undetermined.

Regardless of “how” she died justice allude her which is also a case in Black Liberation. It’s ever changing process without a clear end-date. Violence against homosexual (sexual orientation) trans (gender) non-conforming people still happens. Triple if they are black (race) and poor (class). My message is not meant to be political but social.

If you can’t personally fight for others whose “lifestyle” and “being” you morally disagree with, just get out the way. I think it’s important to not stand in the way of others choosing to fight themselves. All we can ask as human beings is to allow others to live not just survive or get by, and to accept others’ different than you to fight for themselves and not get in the way. I think we should be all able to fight for ourselves, our values, and being.

Marsha P. Johnson in Virgo Black Liberation energy symbolizes body autonomy, fighting for and liberating your physical body, the mind/body/black/gender/class poor connection, and fighting for a place in a world that thinks you don’t belong.
